Several year’s previously they had been celebrating Belgium’s world cup success, beating the U.S.S.R (yes, that long ago) to the World Cup semi-finals and were looking for somewhere to enjoy that iconic Belgian dish; moule & frite, washed down with a pint of Belgium’s finest but sadly they had to settle for soggy chips and a pint of mass-produced, chemically-enhanced, flavourless lager. On that day, the seed was sewn and after a 6 year pregnancy (what stretch marks!) Belgo Noord was born and the people of the Borough of Camden have been smiling ever since.
Work began on our Centraal restaurant in the November 1994 and then the party really got started. Capable of seating over 400 people, the 12,000 square foot was based on Belgium’s central geographical position in Europe, incorporating high volume of transit and the brewing trade.
Since then we’ve grown to include our Bromley and Kingsway restaurants, the latter being in what used to be a Lloyds bank where we’ve turned the vault into our beer cellar!
A true child of the 1990s, Belgo has lived through Black Monday, Edwina Curry leering at John Major, Tamogotchis, giant raves in big abandoned stately homes and two recessions. In short, we’re going nowhere.
